Free number series test
Twelve number series that get harder as you go. Find the next two numbers in each one, then see the rule and the calculation behind every answer.
How it works
- Each series ends with two blank boxes. Pick two numbers in order, left box first.
- The first series add or subtract in simple steps. Later ones multiply, let the step grow or mix two series.
- Look at the difference between neighboring numbers first. If that doesn't help, try multiplying or reading every other number.
- Each question has 45 seconds. When time runs out, the test moves on.
Choose two numbers, left box first.

Number series questions test whether you can spot the rule in a row of numbers and apply it. Easy series add or subtract a fixed amount or alternate between two steps. Medium ones multiply, halve, let the step grow or weave two series together. Hard ones use square numbers, sums of the two previous numbers, two operations in turn, or steps that double. The series come from our own engine, so a retake gives you new ones.

Frequently asked questions
How do I find the rule in a number series?
Write down the difference between each pair of neighbors. If the differences follow a pattern, you have the rule. If not, check for multiplication, square numbers or two series mixed together.
Why do I have to pick two numbers?
Finding two numbers in a row shows that you have the whole rule. A lucky guess on the first one rarely gets the second one right as well.
Do I get new series each time?
Yes. The series are generated when you start, so you can retake the test as often as you like.
